Acquiring authentic materials for Chinese language classes is easier than ever now that technology has made the world smaller. Using authentic materials in language classrooms offers manifold benefits; using them to their optimal efficacy to maximize student learning outcomes is the chief goal of this session. The session will feature examples and activities that utilize authentic material, paired with ideal learning outcomes. There will be a discussion of common challenges and frequently asked questions about how to design lessons using authentic resources.

This session focuses on assessing students’ learning in online environments. Using concrete examples from an online AP Chinese course, presenters will demonstrate how formative and summative assessments are designed and conducted in synchronous and asynchronous teaching modes to assess students’ learning and inform instructions. Participants will be able to understand the principles and process for designing assessments for online Chinese language teaching and learn various digital tools for assessing students’ learning in online settings.

Integrating authentic cultural materials into a curriculum greatly enhances and enlivens a course. The presenters will share how they select and incorporate materials into their thematic units by means of scaffolding and technology tools, while designing three modes of communication activities and assessments throughout synchronous and asynchronous instructions. Participants will experience how authentic materials are integrated for teaching moves in stages, and gain skills in creating activities that are culturally relevant to foster language and cultural proficiency from novice through intermediate to AP levels.
