AP Summer Institute Agenda

Driving question for the Summer Institute: How can PBL help all students thrive in an AP classroom?  
 
Day 1: Focus on Project 1:

Develop “need to know” questions regarding the driving question for the AP Summer Institute 

  • Identify alignment between the AP course and exam description and PBL design elements in the first project of the year 
  • Experience elements of the first project as a student
  • Develop plan to implement Project 1 with feedback from experienced PBL teachers  

Day 2: Focus on Project 2: 

  • Develop an understanding of the role of formative and summative assessments in an AP PBL project 
  • Experience elements of the second project as a student 
  • Learn about and explore AP Classroom  
  • Learn how to interpret and apply data from Instructional Planning Reports (IPRs) to teaching practices 
  • Develop plan to implement Project 2 with feedback from experienced PBL teachers 

Day 3: Focus on Project 3: 

  • Experience elements of the third project as a student 
  • Create appropriate scaffolds within the PBL projects for various student populations 
  • Learn where and how to embed skills into PBL project plans 
  • Develop plan to implement Project 3 with feedback from experienced PBL teachers 

Day 4: Focus on Building a PBL Culture and Introduce Remaining Projects

  • Experience choice breakout sessions on PBL culture-building topics 
  • Preview anticipated learning outcomes for remaining projects
  • Reflect on your successes and make commitments for PBL implementation

Additional Details: Support Sessions
The evening sessions throughout the school year will be held on various dates, allowing you to choose the best one for your schedule. Support Sessions are highly recommended to successfully implement the AP PBL approach but are not required.   

 
How to Prepare for the Summer Institute 

  • Complete the pre-work that your facilitator will email you approximately one week before the workshop.
  • Bring a journal or something to write on. 
  • Complete your Course Audit form if you are a new AP teacher so you can access all AP resources. If you need guidance on how to complete this form, review the Course Audit page on AP Central.
